Burma’s struggle for democracy is a highly complex, nuanced and geo-specific issue, yet it is based on timeless principles of peace through dialogue, on reconciliation, compassion and understanding, on belief in awakening the better aspects of our natures in spite of the dark times we are navigating. It has been a non-violent struggle unbowed and unbroken by the brutality of militarism and it’s philosophy of might-is-right. The tireless work of the National League for Democracy and the good people of Burma ushered in the country’s first democratic government in 60 years in 2015. That government is now imprisoned, routinely tortured, their families harassed, their colleagues and associates “disappeared”; offices have been raided and closed, houses seized, leaders assassinated.
